The Power of Habit

A habit is any regularly repeated behaviour that requires little or no thought and is learned rather than innate. It can be part of any activity ranging from eating and sleep to thinking and reacting and is developed through reinforcement and repetition.

Habit formation is the process which sees a particular behaviour becomes automatic or habitual due to regular repetition. This habit is then made up of 4 key stages.

  1. Cue
  2. Craving
  3. Response
  4. Reward

These four stages of habit are best described as feedback loops, which form an endless cycle that is running every moment that you are alive.

In life, habits can be both good and bad. Common examples of bad habits include: biting your nails, procrastination, overspending and stereotyping. Some of which we won’t even realise we are doing until someone reminds us or we become slightly more self-aware. Mostly, these bad habits are caused by two things: stress or boredom. So, the next time you are biting your nails or procrastinating take a look at the bigger picture and assess what’s really going on in your life.

Good news! Habits can be changed or created, for the better. And I’m going to talk to you next about how you can do this…

Change starts with YOU. You are capable of changing your mindset, your focus, your behaviours, your development, your faith, your responses, your purpose, your vision, your attitude and so on. You are capable of so much change, so stop blaming the situations and take ownership.

Why don’t you spend 5 mins thinking about your bigger picture (this will look different for every single person who reads this article) and just note down things you’d like to change. I’ve got some tips for you on how to develop good habits and make them stick:

  1. Start Ridiculously Small. Most people want to create big change as quickly as possible.
  2. Get Hooked on Your Habit
  3. Have Clear Intentions
  4. Celebrate Your Small Wins
  5. Design Your Environment
  6. Surround Yourself With Supporters. …
  7. Pre-Commit To Your Habit.

However, you have to be consistent, as this is critical if you want it to stick. So, I’ve developed a tool to aid you through this process.
